1 June '11 - Evening League of Gentlemen
by Ben Rive (Reprinted without spelling check)

First of all i'd just like to set the scene, Gashburton star bowler and pinch hitter Pete Blackburn felt the need to contact Springfield evening league on the morning of the game with some words of wisdom, here a few of my favourites quotes, "you're going to get smashed tonight !!!" and "I might have to open and face the hose pipe". This co-indecently the same "hose pipe" that took the wicket of John Prince who was also under the impressions Gashburton would take an easy win, these 4 overs of pure pace went for a measly 16 runs a economy rate for those who arnt great with numbers of 4 an over. Which is more to be said from the king of reverse swing himself who was taken to pieces by the hitting machine that is Paul McCafferty finishing off with 4 over no wickets for 35 runs a slightly lesser effort compared to the hose pipe an economy of 8.75 compared to the "hose pipes" steady 4.

Gashburton won the toss and decided to have a bat, certain members of the Gashburton side decided not to put some pads on as they couldnt face the pace of Springfields opening bowlers (PB) so elected to ride the pine and cheer on from the sidelines. Gashburton eventually decided on the usually sturdy ship that is John Prince to go out and open up accompanied by Will Falle, Princy looked mediocre at best in the early overs after taking a short ball on the top of the ribs from the hose pipe he looked all out of sorts, eventually succumbing to to the short ball and skying the ball high in the air, an excellent catch from Dan Garton running round from third man ended Princy's somewhat miserable innings. Which brought to the crease Stan the Man himself at this point Gashburton were going well with Will Falle all set for a big score, Tristen another player who before the game were confident of a Gashburton victory. Well Tristen's innings followed along the lines of Princy's and after been given a life by the talismanic Julian Burrows on 8 Tristen threw his wickets away the very next ball chipping it right down Michael Renouf's throat for an insignificant 8. In brought Keylock who in all fairness batted well and supported Will Falle to a great knock of 89, before being run out on the very last ball. This meant Springfield's youngsters had to chase a relatively par score of 148.

The "hose pipe's" speaker set boomed out a bit of Kasabian to accompany the opening pair of Dan Garton and Paul McCafferty to the middle Garton started well smashing Corne for two well struck boundaries before middling a short ball straight down PB's throat. As Garton came and went Macca capitalized on some way ward bowling from PB hitting his first ball to the boundary with ease. Macca continued to spank PB around the ground , easily outscoring Gashburton's star players Princy and Tristen before eventually spooning one into the air above the head of shaky bowler PB who spilled a simple catch before tripping over his pride and in an effort not to fall flat on his face and make more of an arse of himself he lazily stuck out a hand which the ball landed straight an amazing piece of luck. This brought the power house Tim Corson and talismanic Julian burrows to the middle who picked up where the openers left off scoring freely all around the ground, after a few big overs (and the swing king being taken out of the attack) the bowling improved and at this point Springfield were struggling with the run rate slightly due to a few quiet overs and in an attempt to push it along a rare misjudgment from Mr Burrows ran Tim out. Luckily Tim took it well and after a mild sedative decided not to flatten Jules on first opportunity. Then out to bat was Michael Renouf always regarded as a very good technically correct player Michael was never one for scoring runs quickly, this statement was quickly quashed as Renouf free'ed his arms and showed the Gashburton boys how it's done. Renouf scored well all around the ground and with 6 overs remaining it looked set for a grand stand finish with Springfield needing 12 and over off the remaining 6. With Jules and Renouf looking good to the finish another mix up saw Burrows run out for a solid 28. Leaving the match balanced on a knife edge Springfield needing roughly 20 runs from the last 2 and a bit overs this is when the hose pipe strolled out to bat. The hose pipe confidently found the edge of the bat on numerous occasions taking Tristens last over for a solid 9, a single from Renouf meant 10 from the over and only 10 to win. Tristen must of been dazed from this display of batting class as he selected revers swing king PB to bowl the last over. * (at this point we all knew the game was won). So Renouf had strike for the last over and hit the first ball for a confident 2 leaving just six to win PB's next ball was dispatched to the boundary even after a helpless dive from John Prince. 4 to win from 3 balls this reduced to 3 from 3 after a typically loose delivery from star Pete Blackburn. 3 from 3 and Renouf struck another 2 to bring the scores level. The penultimate ball with only 1 needed to win went straight through to the keeper, leaving the scores tied with one to come if Gashburton could bowl another dot they would take the win due to a fewer number of wickets lost, but no Renouf stepped up to the plate and confidently swished the ball away well above the infield. Game won job done the look upon Gashburtons players was priceless as they were helplessly flattened by an on form Springfield side.

I would now like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate all of Springfield players on putting these 'lesser men' into there place, good performances all round and a good team spirit meant we were able to beat the self proclaimed best team in the league. In all seriousness thanks to the Springfield lads who choose to desert there club PB, Princy, Tristen and RP you showed up you tried your best but you just didnt have the ability level needed to do as your words had suggested (refer to line 4 PB's early quote). Hope you enjoyed reading this PB's probably broken down at this point underneath his desk unable to take the shame, and remember next time if you don't want your noses rubbed in it don't be so cocky !!!

The firsts lost to a very strong Optimus side, amassing only a few less runs than the seconds needed to win. We'll get to the title of this news update in a minute.

6 July '10 - Yoof pull hoodies over Swannies' eyes.
Well what a topsy turvy world we live in. A JEP correspondent, who will remain nameless, suggested (although lightly) that Springfield may struggle against St Ouen's CC with the lack of Dean "Ballast" Morrison.

The firsts suffered a heartbreaking loss to Optimus and the seconds beat SCF.

03 June '10 - Switcheroo
A reversal of last week as the firsts fall just short and the seconds triumph fairly comfortably.

24 May '10 - Mixed results for Springfield
The firsts triumphed and the seconds fell just short in a weekend of similar scores but different results.

19 May '10 - A bad weekend for Springfield
The Firsts and Seconds lost in two matches that were different in their closeness but both losses mean that Springfield have to pick themselves up for this week's games.

10 May '10 - Norah's crystal ball's up.
Both the firsts and seconds completed comprehensive wins despite the former having predictions of a close game.

06 May '10 - B. Vallois, B. Vallois, B. Vallois, B. Vallois, B. Vallois, B. Vallois
Jimmy Vallois bowled an immense game on Tuesday night, and broke a record for island cricket and probably club level cricket as well. In an over unprecedented in Jersey, and probably the wider cricketing world, Jimmy Vallois, 16, took 6 wickets in an 8 ball, evening league, over, completing an 6 wicket maiden. Jimmy put two wickets down and then got a dot ball, denying him a hatrick. He then got a hatrick and finished off with another dot ball. Newspaper clips to follow.

06 May '10 - Cooke hatrick fails to inspire win.
The seconds closely lost their opening match of the season to Farmer C's. Some wayward bowling and slow middle order batting were arguably the cause.

26 Apr '10 - Firsts win.
The first team got off to a winning start against Vic college. Check the scorecard under results, to the right. Click the photo to enlarge.

24 Apr '10 - Live Scoring goes online!
For the first time in Jersey (and one, if not the, first in the world at this level) live scoring comes to club level. Courtesy of Gina and Heath Kearns, and using the program Total Cricket Scorer
(seen left) Aztec Springfield's first's and second's games will (when possible) be broadcast live streaming to our site. This is a massive leap forward for the club and also for our website, and we thank both Gina and Heath for making this possible. In addition to the live broadcasting, Total Cricket Scorer can also track stats for each player, which should make our player profile section (still under construction) much more interesting!

23 Apr '10 - New website.
New website design is now 90% completed. New Graphics and now with an added content.
